Profiles in Giving

Denny & Cynthia Mather

"Baltimore Reads is down there where the rubber hits the road."

For Cindy and Denny Mather literacy is a powerful family value. "For most of us, there is a lack of understanding of how a child is affected by a parent's ability to read," says Denny Mather. "Parents maintain a cycle of literacy or lack of literacy.  Literacy is a family issue. At Baltimore Reads, we're doing two things: helping the current crop of kids learn to read and helping parents do much of the work at home.  Baltimore Reads is down in there where the rubber hits the road."

Author and philanthropist Cindy Mather says that giving always has rewards.  "Giving takes you outside of yourself," she says.  "It enriches what you have. If you keep it to yourself, it's one-dimensional. When you share it, it becomes three-dimensional.  You've made a difference."
